Diwali warning after £45m gold theft in London

Jewellery and gold worth £45m has been stolen from Asian families in London over 12 months, Scotland Yard has said. The number of offences for the 2014-15 financial year fell by 24%, or 1,324 incidents, compared to 2013-14. But police said there was often a spike in thefts around Diwali – the five-day Hindu festival of light – which begins this year on 11 November. A spokesman advised people to consider storing jewellery in safes and avoid travelling alone.

Man jailed for smash-and-grab jewellery store raid

A man who was part of a moped-riding gang which robbed a jewellery store in Brent, London, with hammers and axes has been jailed for five and a half years.
Lookman Shekoni, 24, of Josephine Avenue, Lambeth, had previously pleaded guilty at Harrow Crown Court on Monday, September 28 to robbery having being caught by passers-by at the scene…..

North police smash east European crime gang

Police have smashed a gang of eastern Europeans who were suspected of targeting properties in Highland towns. The Press and Journal reported this week that organised groups of criminals had been blamed by police for a spate of break-ins across the north. Up to 50 incidents had been reported in recent weeks, with Chief Superintendent Julian Innes revealing that targets had been “planned and researched” – with thieves “casing the joint” before moving in.
